Origins & Scientific Background

Discovered in 1973 by Dr. Loren Pickart, GHK-Cu was isolated after observing that liver tissue from older subjects performed significantly more actively when exposed to plasma proteins from younger subjects.

The peptide Gly-His-Lys (GHK) has a remarkably high affinity for copper, forming the stable GHK-Cu complex. This complex serves as an endogenous mechanism to safely transport copper ions to target tissues for cellular repair. Endogenous levels decline with age, dropping from ~200 ng/ml at age 20 to ~80 ng/ml by age 60.

Primary Research Applications

  • Skin Biology: Stimulates collagen, elastin, and glycosaminoglycan synthesis (including hyaluronic acid) to maintain structural density.
  • Follicle & Scalp Research: Studied for supporting microvascular circulation around hair follicles and modulating growth phase activity.
  • DNA Repair & Wound Healing: Upregulates tissue regeneration pathways and regulates scar tissue remodeling by modulating collagen structures.
